UNPACKING TOURISM, COLONIALISM & RACISM WITHIN OUR DIASPORA

A Responsive Panel -

OUR DIASPORIC COMMUNITY’S ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY TO ONE ANOTHER WHEN TRAVELING AND EXCHANGING EXPERIENCES.

Recent incidents involving tourists on the Island of Puerto Rico have created rising tensions. Some tourists of our stateside African Diaspora community have garnered attention on social media and in the news for not following local pandemic health measures and disregarding the local community. Due to the unfair coverage of Black and Brown tourists, in comparison to the white tourists who have also engaged in harmful behaviors since the beginning of the pandemic, antagonistic conversations and an increase in the racial profiling of both visibly Black tourists and locals have emerged.

Grounded in our shared history, moderator Dash Harris will discuss with guests the complexity of the racial and political ramifications and consequences these pandemic getaways have on the lives of our brothers and sisters in other regions of the Diaspora.
